Week 1: Overcoming the bondage of sin, no longer a slave to sin
Romans 8:1-4
Romans 8 has been referred to as:
Why is Romans 8 referred to in such high regard? Over the next 4 weeks, we’ll look at some key points of Romans 8 and how we can use them in life, in our call to worship, and for a call to worship personally outside of the walls of the church.
Romans 8:1-4 begins a section in scripture about the power of sanctification and living free. Verse 1 begins with the word “therefore.” If the word “therefore” is present, what is it “there for?” Previously in chapter 7, we read of the practice of sanctification and the question of the law and the struggle with sin. Chapter 8 picks up from that discussion. I suggest reading chapter 7 or even all of Romans 1-7 before digging into chapter 8.
Chapter 8 begins “Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life, in Christ Jesus, has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did! Sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Prayer: Thank you Lord that we are set free in You. Thank you, Jesus, that your work on the cross is powerful to overcome the weakness of sin and our flesh. Lord, help us to walk in your Spirit today, as we worship you and each day of the coming week. In Jesus’ Name, AMEN!
Week 2: Adopted, Heirs, Children of God
Romans 8:12-17
In Romans 8:12-17 we read that we are also heirs, children of God and we are adopted into God’s family. As an adopted member of God’s family, we receive all the rights and privileges that come with being in His family!
“So, then brothers and sisters, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh, for if you are living in accord with the flesh, you are going to die. But if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons and daughters of God. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons and daughters by which we cry out Abba Father! The Spirit Himself testifies with our Spirit that we are Children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, so that we may be glorified with Him.”
Prayer: Father God, thank you, that as we come to faith in Jesus, we are your Children, we are Your heirs. And because of that, we have access to an abundant life in You and an eternal life with You. Thank you for adopting us into Your family and we praise and worship You this morning. In Jesus’ Name, AMEN!
Week 3: Expectant Living
Romans 8:18-30
In Romans 8:18-30, we have a picture of hope, as it affects us as individuals.
8:18: “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us….”
8:24-25: “For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope, for who hopes for what he already sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance, we wait eagerly for it…”
8:28-30: “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For those whom he foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; and these whom he predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified, and these whom he justified, He also glorified.”
Prayer: Father God, thank you that in our sufferings, we can come to You and our hope can be in You and what You’ve already accomplished. Help us to persevere in Your name in whatever we do as You call us. Thank you, Lord, that Your goodness still reigns, that You still reign! Lord, help us to respond well and with Your heart to the calling You have for each of us and as a church. Thank you that You call us your own, we worship You. In Jesus’ Name, AMEN!
Week 4 Triumphant living, God is for us!
Romans 8:31-39
Romans 8:26-30 mentions the Spirit helping and interceding for us. We see that God causes all things to work together for those who love Him; and we see that we are being called, justified and glorified by God.
Romans 8:31-39: “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also, with Him, freely give us all things? Who will bring charges against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, but rather, was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or trouble, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?
Just as it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We were regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Prayer: Father God, thank you that we can live triumphantly in You. Thank you that you are for us! Thank you, Jesus, that You have taken away our sins, the sins of the world so that we might have a relationship with You. Thank you that nothing can separate us from You and Your Love Lord. Help us to remember this each day Lord, we love You and worship You, In Jesus’ Name we pray, AMEN!
I hope this series has been a blessing and has encouraged you to press into God, your relationship with Him, what He’s doing and where He wants each of us to be as we join Him in the work of the kingdom and in sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ!
